As a coach, your earnings may be subject to U.S. income taxes. To assist with U.S. tax compliance, Gallup may collect your taxpayer information.
U.S. persons must fill out a Form W-9. At the end of January, Gallup will provide coaches who’ve earned over $20,000 with more than 200 transactions with a Form 1099-K showing their reportable earnings from the previous year.
If you're a freelancer who the I.R.S. defines as a “U.S. Person” and earn money working with your client through Gallup Exchange, you need to report this income on your tax return. Because of changes to the tax laws, most freelancers — including those who earned more than $600 — will no longer receive a Form 1099-MISC from Gallup Exchange.
You can learn more about how the IRS classifies taxpayers for U.S. tax purposes at irs.gov. If you're unsure of which form to submit, please consult a tax professional who can clarify your tax status.
